Basic Overview:
Middle Baptist Church of Memphis, Tennessee is prayerfully seeking a full time pastor called by God and equipped to effectively preach and teach God’s Word. The Senior Pastor must be responsible for the biblical and spiritual obligations as outlined in I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 and must also be a man after God’s own heart (I Samuel 16:7). The candidate must be a born again baptized believer in Jesus Christ with the ability to also fulfill the spiritual needs of the congregation through visitations, prayer, conducting weddings, funerals and administering the Ordinances of the Church. We are seeking a visionary with strong leadership skills who preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ, teaches sound Baptist Doctrine, engages in pastoral care, directs Christian growth and development and promotes missions and the Great Commission for increasing the kingdom of God.
Principle Accountabilities:
- Must have the ability to prepare and deliver biblically sound, inspirational, and spirit-filled sermons and provide Bible-based teaching.
- Must work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Official Board and all ministries of the Church.
- Must be a visionary with sound judgment, discernment and the ability to articulate a clear vision for the future of Middle Baptist Church (ongoing).
- Must demonstrate the abilities to be an effective orator, teacher, counselor, and evangelist.
- Must be accessible, sensitive and able to relate to all demographics within the congregation.
- Must have a proven record as a skilled administrator and manager of church staff and programs.
- Must have effective communication skills (written and verbal).
- Must adhere to the church bylaws, policies and procedures adopted by the church.
- Must perform additional responsibilities as required.

Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience in pastoral ministry. Graduate of an accredited seminary, divinity school or Bible College preferred.
Must be a preacher of the Gospel with a minimum of five years of pastoral experience.

BASIC FUNCTION: The Senior Pastor is to be the spiritual leader of the church. The Senior Pastor has the primary responsibility for preaching and teaching the Word of God and leading in the observance of the church ordinances. The Senior Pastor will participate in the planning of worship services and events and equip staff and lay leaders to successfully coordinate those services and events. The position will oversee and lead outreach and pastoral care efforts, including biblical counseling, performing weddings and conducting funeral services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior Pastor will be called to lead the church to understand, embrace, and accomplish its mission: “to make disciples”.
The responsibilities of the Senior Pastor may be outlined in terms of his primary biblical roles as follows:
- Elder/Overseer: the principal leader and vision caster of the church (cf. Acts 20:28; Philippians 1:1; I Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; I Peter 5:1-4).
- Evangelist: models the practice of personal evangelism and ensures that the church is challenged and equipped to be obedient to the Great Commission (cf. II Timothy 4:5; Matthew 28:19).
- Shepherd: models the heart of the Chief Shepherd and ensures that the church is well led, cared for, and protected (cf. Acts 20:28; I Peter 5:1-4).
- Preacher/Teacher: the principal communicator of God’s Word in public worship and ensures that the Church is growing to maturity in Christ (cf. Acts 6:4; Ephesians 4:11; II Timothy 4:1-4; Titus 1:9).
- Equipper: partners with other leaders to empower and equip maturing members for significant service and ministry by discovering, developing, and deploying their spiritual gifts (cf. Ephesians 4:12; II Timothy 2:2).
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Senior Pastor will be one who is called of God and set apart to the gospel ministry, evangelical in theology, in accordance with the Baptist Faith and committed to living and serving in a manner consistent with the standards set forth in Scripture for such a leader. The Senior Pastor must be one who exemplifies a godly character, is compassionate in recognizing and meeting the needs of others, and demonstrates a high level of competence.
